From the dawn of Indian civilization, the mighty course of the River Ganges (Ganga in Hindi) shaped and nourished the cultural, artistic, and spiritual identity of the people who lived along its bank. Soul of Ganges celebrates that essence through North Indian classical music and dance, invoking the mystical journey of the Ganges – beginning in the lofty heights of the Himalayas, abode of Lord Shiva, continuing its path through the sacred city of Varanasi , and culminating in the ocean.

This evening will feature sitarist Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan who is one of the finest sitar players alive today. His dazzling virtuosity and innovative genius have been recognized both by Pt. Ravi Shankar and the late Ustad Vilayat Khan, his uncle. Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan learned his music from his father, Ustad Aziz Khan, and enjoys an impeccable pedigree. He is a seventh generation heir to the sitar's first family, the Etawah Gharana. His  global reputation as an awe-inspiring performer is complemented by his ability to spread his music as a dedicated and loving guru. Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan sums up his mastery of this most intricate art form with a profoundly simple philosophy: "Music is my life"

He will be accompanied by tabla player Subhajyoti Guha, a highly talented, young tabla player from Kolkata, India, is a disciple of Ustad Keramatullah Khan of Farukkabad Gharana. He is one of the new genre of tabla exponents who are taking this highly popular North Indian percussion instrument to new heights in the 21st century. Subhajyoti's first public performance was in 1992  in Berlin, Germany with his Guruji (teacher) Pandit Sankha Chatterjee, where he enthralled his audience. He performs regularly in India, USA, Canada and Europe both as a soloist and an accompanist. His talent has been acknowledged by maestros like Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.

What the press says:

“Parvez has taken his rich musical inheritance to places that no other player has ever even attempted” – India Currents

The evening will begin with a kathak dance recital by talented and dynamic dancer, Sudeshna Maulik, accompanied by Montreal-based tabla player Shawn Mativetsky (disciple of Pandit Sharda Sahai of the Varanasi tabla gharana), and sarodia Raja Bhattacharya (disciple of Ustad Bidyut Khan). She is fortunate to be the disciple of top dancers Pandit Birju Maharaj and Padmabhushan Kumudini Lakhia, and she has been accompanied by great maestros such as Pandit Anindo Chatterejee and Ustad Sabir Khan during her childhood Kolkata days.
