Contradictions, comparison and ultimately confluence, Dvaita | Duality is a fusion of artistic expression and philosophical inquiry. Through two distinct dance forms, Kuchipudi and Balinese, Dvaita-Duality displays the dynamic balance of opposing energies and beautifully challenges the Colonial construct of Gender. Centred around ‘Ardhanareeswara’, the composite form of Shiva-Shakti the androgynous God, the dance visualises the distinct yet complementary nature of the masculine and feminine energies. A layered performance, this piece explores the philosophical questions of how our consciousness (Purusha/ Male) interacts with the material world (Prakriti/Female). Dvaita-Duality aspires to resolve the paradox of opposites not through negotiation, but by harmonious expression and positive influences of life.
“What makes Dvaita-Duality more than a performance is how it holds past and present in the same breath. Through ancient gestures and new collaborations, it speaks of identity without borders, energy beyond gender, and tradition as a living, evolving, life force.” – Indian Express

Kabir Cultural Centre presented the 14th edition of the South Asian Film Festival of Montreal in the spring of 2025. All films are carefully subtitled in French, thus promoting intercultural access and dialog. A mini-edition will be presented in Saguenay from 21st to 23rd November, thanks to an inspiring collaboration with the Bibliothèques de la ville de Saguenay, Cégep de Jonquière and the ciné-club of Jonquière. Kabir Centre is proud to present, in collaboration with La maison de la culture Ahuntsic emerging musicians from Quebec/Canada. The following events are proposed.
1. Portraits of Devi (female deity) by Arjun Ashok (vocal) – Anjana Srinivasan (Violin) – Sainan Kandiah (Mridangam) – Kajanan Shanmugarajah (Ghatam)
The months of September and October in the Hindu calendar are filled with celebrations of the Goddess – a time when her many forms are honoured through music, ritual, and devotion. Festivals such as Navratri and Deepavali shine within this season, each carrying its own traditions and expressions of reverence. This concert, Portraits of Devi across Composers, brings this spirit to life, tracing how Carnatic masters have painted her in melody and verse. Arjun Ashok’s vocals paint vivid images of Devi, echoed by Anjana Srinivasan’s violin that arcs and blooms with each raga. Sainan Kandiah’s mridangam — a double-headed South Indian drum — provides a steady rhythmic foundation, while Kajanan Shanmugarajah’s ghatam — a clay pot percussion instrument — adds a warm, earthy resonance. This is a concert both celebratory and meditative — a living garland of sound.
2. Soulful Melodies and Divine Tones by Lionel Pezzano (sitar) – Saulo Olmedo Evans (tabla)
This duo reflects the richness and diverse influences of their backgrounds: a deep and subtle blend of tradition, modernity, and a spiritual vision of the world. Through music, these two musicians have found a unique connection, bringing their paths together at the heart of Hindustani music. Deeply rooted in tradition, this duet offers a sparkling and unique rendition of North Indian classical music, from its most meditative aspects to its most virtuosic expressions.”
3. Laya Triveni (Confluence of rhythms) – Ninad Puranik, Sainan Kandiah, Chinmay Kulkarni, Kajanan Shanmugarajah
Immerse yourself in a soulful journey where the Chinmay Kulkarni’s Tabla, Sainan Kandiah’s Mridangam, and Kajanan Shanmugarajah’s Ghatam flow like the three sacred rivers, each with its own vibrant voice. Guided by the serene melodic landscape created by Ninad Puranik on the harmonium, the rhythmic rivers carry their ancient traditions from across India to meet in a breathtaking and sacred confluence of sound. Experience the pulse of centuries-old rhythms, the joy of spontaneous dialogue, and the pure meditative power of laya.

Enjoy a rare opportunity to see Pakistan’s famed Fareed Ayaz & Abu Muhammad Ensemble to perform Qawwali — a form of devotional Sufi music with origins in ancient Islamic poetry and brought to the west in the 20th century by the incomparable master of Sufi singing, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. While regretting the fact of a life cut short in its prime when this master passed away all too soon, we can rejoice nevertheless with the tradition so beautifully carried forward by Fareed Ayaz & Abu Muhammad, themselves children of another famous Sufi singer of yesteryears Munshi Raziuddin Ahmed Khan, a household name in Pakistan as well as Hydrerabad in erstwhile India. Known as ‘the path of the heart’, Qawwali expresses the fervent devotion of the great Sufi mystics. The music begins by drawing the audience in with a meditative rhythm of chants, melodies, and percussion. Steadily, the rhythm builds, reaching ecstatic peaks that transport both musicians and listeners closer to the divine

For 4 years, the Kabir Cultural Center, a charitable organization based in Montreal, has been organizing concerts that also shine in other regions of Quebec.
This initiative aims to offer more people the chance to appreciate practices that are thousands of years old. Indian classical music is part of the world heritage and it deserves to be integrated into the cultural offer of Quebec.
The Kabir Centre inaugurates its 2023 PLURICITY concert season with the Magnificent sitar played by Mita Nag, one of India’s leading female artists. She will be accompanied by the brilliant percussionist Indranil Mallick.
The enchanting music of the Indian sitar has become popular since the 1960s thanks to Ravi Shankar – an Indian sitarist musician and composer of international fame. Attracted by the particular sound of the sitar, with all its sympathetic resonance effects, in 1966, George Harrison, of the Beatles, became his pupil. He is the first western musician to integrate the sitar and the tabla in most of his compositions.
Mita Nag, daughter of veteran sitarist, Pandit Manilal Nag, belongs to the Vishnupur Gharana of Bengal, a school of music nearly 300 years old. In terms of lineage, she is the sixth-generation sitar player in her family, the tradition having begun with her fore fathers.
Mita was initiated into music at the tender age of four. Her tutelage under her father started at the age of six. She appeared for her debut performance at the age of ten years. The same year Mita won the Junior National Talent Search Award of the Government of India.
Mita Nag has performed in a number of concerts, solo as well as duet recitals with her father in major cities of India and in many cities of the US, Canada, Japan and Europe.
Indranil Mallick, a promising tabla player of rare skill, has already established himself both as a soloist and accompanist.
Born to a family of genuine music connoisseurs, he received his initial training in tabla when he was only five.
He belongs to Luckhnow Gharana style of tabla. Being an ‘A’ grade performer of All India Radio, Kolkata, he is featured regularly on programs aired throughout India.
In 2002 Indranil began international touring with performances in Europe, USA, Canada, UK, Germany, Switzerland, Ukraine, Estonia, Russia, Austria and Holland. During these tours he represented India in many world-renowned festivals.
Come experience the mystical beauty of Hindustani music! The Magnificent sitar concert is a unique event not to be missed!

We are very pleased to present, for the first time in Montreal, a concert of Surshringar with the virtuoso Pandit Joydeep Ghosh. The Surshringar is a musical instrument originating in the Indian subcontinent and has many similarities with the sarod. It is larger than the sarod and produces a deeper sound. It predates the sarod as an instrument.

Gifted with an ability to summon crystal-clear melodies from his drums, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee is one of India’s greatest living masters of this instrument. Disciple of the legendary grandmaster and Guru Pandit Gyan Prakash Ghosh, he has practised with legends such as Nikhil Bannerjee and has accompanied venerable masters such as the flutist Hariprasad Chaurasia, the saord virtuoso Ali Akbar Khan, the santoor artist Shivkumar Sharma and the Grande Dame of Hindustani vocal Gangubai Hangal.
Ravi Naimpally began his studies with his uncle late Padmabhushan Nikhil Ghosh in Mumbai, India. In 1990 he became a student of Farukkabhad Gharana and continued his studies with Pandit Anindo Chatterjee. In 1997, he was called ‘the coolest musician of the year’ by Eye Magazine of Toronto.

This is a long-awaited evening of popular songs both Bollywood and Ghazals. A double-treat of soulful singing, enhanced by superb keyboard and harmonium support by two other excellent musicians.
Hita Raghunathan, a trained singer of Hindustani music, ghazals and bhajans, is arguably the most popular South Asian singer in Montreal. Whenever she sings, she draws sold-out audiences. Her singing is full of sweetness and vigour and her diction is simply perfect. She will be accompanied this evening by Mushfiq Hashmi on harmonium and keyboard as well as Rakesh Sethi also on keyboard.
