For 4 years, the Kabir Cultural Center, a charitable organization based in Montreal, has been organizing concerts that also shine in other regions of Quebec.
This initiative aims to offer more people the chance to appreciate practices that are thousands of years old. Indian classical music is part of the world heritage and it deserves to be integrated into the cultural offer of Quebec.
The Kabir Centre inaugurates its 2023 PLURICITY concert season with the Magnificent sitar played by Mita Nag, one of India’s leading female artists. She will be accompanied by the brilliant percussionist Indranil Mallick.
The enchanting music of the Indian sitar has become popular since the 1960s thanks to Ravi Shankar – an Indian sitarist musician and composer of international fame. Attracted by the particular sound of the sitar, with all its sympathetic resonance effects, in 1966, George Harrison, of the Beatles, became his pupil. He is the first western musician to integrate the sitar and the tabla in most of his compositions.
Mita Nag, daughter of veteran sitarist, Pandit Manilal Nag, belongs to the Vishnupur Gharana of Bengal, a school of music nearly 300 years old. In terms of lineage, she is the sixth-generation sitar player in her family, the tradition having begun with her fore fathers.
Mita was initiated into music at the tender age of four. Her tutelage under her father started at the age of six. She appeared for her debut performance at the age of ten years. The same year Mita won the Junior National Talent Search Award of the Government of India.
Mita Nag has performed in a number of concerts, solo as well as duet recitals with her father in major cities of India and in many cities of the US, Canada, Japan and Europe.
Indranil Mallick, a promising tabla player of rare skill, has already established himself both as a soloist and accompanist.
Born to a family of genuine music connoisseurs, he received his initial training in tabla when he was only five.
He belongs to Luckhnow Gharana style of tabla. Being an ‘A’ grade performer of All India Radio, Kolkata, he is featured regularly on programs aired throughout India.
In 2002 Indranil began international touring with performances in Europe, USA, Canada, UK, Germany, Switzerland, Ukraine, Estonia, Russia, Austria and Holland. During these tours he represented India in many world-renowned festivals.
Come experience the mystical beauty of Hindustani music! The Magnificent sitar concert is a unique event not to be missed!
